Organic Farming Tour in Belize
The 33-acre Maya Organic Farm is an essential part of the Chaa Creek Reserve. It supplies freshly harvested produce for The Lodge at Chaa Creek, The Guava Limb Cafe, and The Belize Rainforest Retreat at Chaa Creek.
The farm combines traditional Maya farming techniques with advanced systems, including irrigated raised beds filled with composted soil enriched with nutrients sourced from nature.
The indigenous Maya have thrived for over 2,000 years through subsistence farming for home use, barter, and sale, which has been the backbone of their existence. They have utilized natural resources to nourish the soil and protect their crops from pests, as costly chemical solutions were not viable. Their sustainable practices have clearly withstood the test of time.
As part of our various on-site activities, we offer guided horseback riding tours to the Maya Farm, where guests can learn about traditional Maya farming methods.
Visitors will see a variety of fruits and vegetables grown on the farm, as well as the different organic farming practices and soil enrichment techniques used in a five-year rotation plan, which incorporates Makuna beans and Lucina as nitrogen-fixing plants.
Freshly harvested organic fruits and vegetables from our traditional Maya Farm are complemented by local dairy and meat products, creating a distinct flavor profile characteristic of the Caribbean and Latin American regions.
